Why self realization is important

March 19, 2023
Self-realization is a journey of self-discovery and growth that involves introspection, self-reflection, and awareness. It requires honesty, courage, and the willingness to confront fears and limitations. Hence, self-realization can bring inner peace, confidence, and fulfilment and lead to a deeper connection with oneself, the Creator, others, and the world.
Why self-recognition is important

Self realization is often misunderstood as an abstract concept with no real-world benefits. But it's essential for leading a meaningful and fulfilled life. We all strive to make sense of ourselves and our place in the world, and self-realization allows us to do just that. It helps us understand how our experiences shape who we are and paves the way for personal growth.

At its core, self realization means accepting yourself without judgment or external pressures. Reflecting on your beliefs, values, and behaviours can help you understand your identity, which may not guarantee happiness or success. However, it does increase one's capacity for contentment and fulfilment, which many people struggle with due to societal expectations.

Taking time to think about your thoughts and feelings in an environment free from criticism gives you valuable knowledge and strengthens your connections with others.

People gain awareness of their distinct identity and potential as they grow in their understanding of themselves and their relationships with others and the world.

What Islam teaches about self realization

Allah has uniquely created humans, giving them exceptional qualities and capabilities to lead the world. In different eras, Allah sent His messengers to nations, instructing them to follow the commands of Allah, lead their lives according to the principles of Allah and His prophets, and recognize their strengths and weaknesses.

The prominent Islamic philosopher Iman Ghazali emphasizes the necessity of self realization in his book 'Nuqsa Chemiyah,' explaining that to know the Creator; one must acquaint themselves with their inner self.

The Holy Quran states in Chapter 41, Verse 53 that "We (Allah) will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur'an) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things?"

Therefore, the Quran indicates the future of humanity, where it will progress in every walk of life, including the development of aviation, science, understanding flora & fauna, and medical sciences.

Furthermore, the Quran in Chapter 29, Verse states that "As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allah's Religion - Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allah is with the Muhsinun (good doers)."

Allah has granted humans particular talents, strengths, and weaknesses. Acknowledging them is essential to comprehend the purpose of life.

Allah has sent His messengers to guide the people on the path to self realization and living following the teachings of Islam. If we don't play our role in this universe, then the purpose of our lives is lost.

Allama Iqbal, a renowned scholar of his day, stated, "Whatever one's fate, every individual should keep their identity, which can be reached only by self realization."

The Quran's main aim is to awaken in humans the higher consciousness of their multiple connections with Allah and the universe. It is unfortunate to see that people today are living life without any purpose. We should bring value to our lives and society.

How to train yourself to attain self realization skills

Stop and name your emotions when experiencing negative feedback. Being aware of your physical state allows you to recognize feelings and evaluate the situation objectively from a "third-person" perspective. Doing this can help prevent making decisions with unintended consequences.

For example, your brain may block all those thoughts you hear from others contrary to your belief or mindset. Step back and listen to them, it will not change your belief, but you will start training your brain to listen and actively translate the logic with neutrality. You will learn new things or visualize things from a third person's perspective and may find a topic that resonates with you.

You may be surrounded by a toxic environment or negativity. Take a break, go somewhere you like, connect to your Creator, pray, and read Quran or Holy scriptures. Read what your Creator is saying to you. Find contentment with what you have.

Believe in yourself and stop thinking about what others will say about you. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP.

Conclusion

People must break free from conventional norms and customs to identify their unique identity and purpose, empowering themselves to achieve their goals with perseverance and resolve.

This quest for self realization is not merely selfish; it is a collaborative effort that can only move society forward when individuals are enabled to maximize their potential and make significant contributions.

We must develop self-awareness to measure our progress and efficacy and adjust our strategy if needed, a rare ability many overlook in favour of emotionally-driven interpretations of our circumstances.

Self realization is a progressive process, as humans naturally grow over time. By recognizing our capabilities and strengths, we can comprehend our destiny, which Allah has set for us. Through self realization, a man can transform his life, gain great stature, and receive bounties from His Creator in this world and the hereafter.
